Welcome to the One Percent Growth blog! I’m thrilled you’ve found your way here, and I’m excited to embark on this journey of personal growth and development with you. Before we dive into the world of self-improvement, I want to take a moment to explain why I started this blog and what you can expect from the One Percent Growth blog.
Who am I?
First things first: I suspect I’m somewhat like you. I’m not an expert, a life coach, a psychologist, or a self-help guru. I’m just someone that is fascinated by the potential for growth and improvement that exists within each of us. In my 40s, I have become hooked on trying to live my best life, in every facet – money, career, family, health, fitness, hoobies etc. and started to consume content in many ways that got me started on this journey. One concept that I kept coming back to, was the importance of the compounding effect that taking small steps every day was the realy key to success, and these promises to “transform your life overnight” was just pie in the sky.
Self-improvement, in any form, is tough. It takes focus, determination and hard work. Reading a book needs you to sit down somewhere quiet and find the time, day in day out, to read. Losing weight means you need to exercise more and eat better – every day, forever. That is not easy for anyone.
Why start a blog?
You might be wondering, “If you’re not an expert, why start a blog about personal development?” It’s a fair question, and the answer is simple: I believe in the power of sharing my experiences to help others grow. While I may not have all the answers, I have an insatiable curiosity and a genuine passion for self-improvement. This blog is my way of documenting my journey, sharing what I learn along the way, and hopefully inspiring others to join me in this pursuit of becoming the best versions of ourselves.
The One Percent principle
At the core of One Percent Growth is a simple yet powerful idea: the principle of 1% improvement. This concept suggests that if we focus on getting just 1% better each day, over time, we can achieve remarkable results. It’s about making small, consistent changes that compound into significant growth.
Let’s break this down:
- The power of compound growth
Imagine improving by just 1% every day for a year. It might not seem like much at first, but thanks to the power of compounding, you’d end up 37 times better by the end of the year! Here’s the math:
1.01*365 = 37.78
This means that if you started at a baseline of 1 and improved by 1% each day for a year, you’d be at 37.78 by the end of the year. That’s an astounding 3,678% improvement!
- The flipside: the danger of small negative changes
Conversely, if you decline by 1% each day for a year, you’d end up at 0.03, or 97% worse than when you started. This illustrates how small negative habits can compound over time, leading to significant setbacks.
0.99*365 = 0.03
- Realistic expectations
Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Is it really possible to improve by 1% every single day?” The answer is probably not, at least not in a straight line. The reality is that life is full of ups and downs – some days you might improve by 5%, while other days you might slide back 2%. The key for me, has always been to focus on the overall trend and to keep moving forward, even if it’s just by tiny increments. Andy to try and do that in multiple fields, concurrently.
Why the One Percent approach works
- It’s manageable
Big, sweeping life changes are often really difficult to sustain. They require massive willpower, significant changes in behaviour and can be overwhelming. In contrast, a 1% improvement is something anyone can aim for. It’s a small enough goal that it doesn’t trigger our fear of change or failure. - It’s flexible
The beauty of the 1% principle is that it can be applied to virtually any area of life. Whether you’re looking to improve your fitness, advance your career, enhance your relationships, or boost your mental health, the concept of small, incremental improvements is universally applicable. - It builds momentum
Success breeds success. When you start seeing the results of your small improvements, it motivates you to keep going. This positive reinforcement creates a virtuous cycle of growth and achievement. - It’s sustainable
Unlike crash diets or extreme workout regimens, the 1% approach is something you can maintain over the long term. It’s about creating lasting habits and making lifestyle changes that stick.
